A Little Ghost Visited

Last night, while I slept,
A little ghost found their way in.
They looked like the past
and regret
I knew their face, surprised I hadn't forgotten.
They beckoned me forward,
to walk down the sandy-sea road.
I let my feet stumble after them
for awhile
But I knew the time we had was not time I owed.
They floated next to me
Eyes glinting with a mischievous light.
I didn't want to tell them,
and ruin
what nostalgia they felt in electric delight.
We wandered together
passing fields we ran through when we were young
and they pointed them out
like no time had passed,
Though my new life without them had already begun.
As the sun disappeared behind moonless darkness,
We returned to the home where I had buried their bones.
They looked down
and nodded,
And with a wink and a smile, they dissolved again into the unknown.
I do not know where they go when they're gone
And I don't have the heart to turn them away at my door.
But I know that, one day,
They'll be gone for good.
And then I'll rest well, knowing they're gone, forevermore.
